Prove a scalable new model for circular construction, backed by a three-year Horizon Europe programme with €4 million of EU funding.
NuBau aims to tackle two major challenges facing the construction industry: the carbon associated with producing new building materials and the large volumes of waste created when buildings are demolished, with valuable materials often crushed or recycled into lower-value materials rather than reused in new structures.
Cities are full of valuable materials.
Yet when buildings are demolished, much of that value is lost.
Don't crush something that can still be a building component.
The NuBau initiative brings together twelve organisations from across Europe to collaborate nine workstreams to unlock urban mining, with Queens University Belfast as the project co-ordinator.
